"The need for special
ethical principles in a scientific/business society is the same as the need for ethical
principles in society as a whole. They are mutually beneficial. They help make
our relationships mutually pleasant and productive. A professional society is
a voluntary, cooperative organization, and those who must conform to its rules
are also those who benefit from the conformity of others. Each has a stake in
maintaining general compliance."

There has been a dramatic increase in the ethical expectations of businesses and professions over the past
ten years. Increasingly, customers, clients and employees are deliberately
seeking out those who define the basic ground rules of their operations on a day
to day basis"
(quote from the website of the International ethics business directory)
When you complete a form and your occupation is requested could you with all honesty
give "professional" as your occupation and reap the rewards that go
with it. It is not in doubt that you are professional but are you
a
"professional".
To be a "professional" there
are several criteria to fulfil. You must ....
1) Belong to a professional Institute
2) Agree to abide by the Code of Ethics of that professional Institute
3) This code of Ethics should..........
-
define accepted/acceptable behaviours;
-
promote high standards of practice;
-
provide a benchmark for members to use for self evaluation;
-
establish a framework for professional behaviour and
responsibilities;
-
act as a vehicle for occupational identity;
-
act as a mark of occupational maturity;"
The ITRE is the only
Institute which offers these criteria and would allow you to use the
letters Memb. ITRE behind your name (or Asso. ITRE if you are a member of
one of the associated Industries) as a sign of your professionalism. If you would like to join
the ITRE as a personal professional member you must have been active in the
Telecommunications Industry for a minimum of two years and be able to
prove it. You are then entitled to
join us and we would respectfully request that you read the following code
of ethics before applying to join.
"A profession's ethical standards must
be compatible with our common morality, but they go beyond our common morality.
You could say that they interpret our common morality for the specific details
of work of a particular occupational group"
(by Vivian Weil, from her paper "Prospects for International
Standards"
